Natural Teeth Whitening TipsSummer has, once again, flown by, meaning the start of the new school year is just around the corner. With back to school time quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to start preparing your smile to be more dazzling than ever. Whether you are a student preparing to go back to school, a mom wanting to harmlessly whiten your child’s teeth, or just eager to naturally whiten your own teeth, our Raleigh dentist office has some helpful tips for you. Here are 5 natural ways to whiten your teeth for back to school.

  1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is renowned for its natural whitening properties, which is why several toothpaste brands include it in their products. Since it’s a mild abrasive, baking soda can help to get rid of surface stains on your teeth, while also preventing bacteria from growing in your mouth. Several studies have also proven that brushing with baking soda removes a greater amount of plaque than brushing without it and results in an overall whiter smile if used consistently over time.

Directions: Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of water and gently brush with the paste. Make sure the paste is more runny than gritty, as scrubbing too vigorously with a gritty substance can easily deteriorate your tooth enamel. Thoroughly rinse after brushing. You can try this remedy a few times per week.

  1. Coconut Oil Pulling

Several individuals swear by the coconut oil pulling method, saying that their teeth not only become whiter, but their overall health is improved (reduced headaches, clearer skin, increased energy, etc.). Oil pulling originates from the traditional Indian culture and is used to remove toxins from the body and better oral hygiene. While any kind of oil offers a variety of benefits, many individuals prefer coconut oil due to the neutral taste and broad range of health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and killing harmful bacteria. Several studies have shown that consistent oil pulling every day reduces bacteria, plaque, and the risk of gingivitis. However, science has not yet proven if oil pulling actually whitens your teeth or not, although numerous individuals claim that it both whitens and brightens your teeth. Regardless, it definitely does improve your oral hygiene and overall health, so give it a try!

Directions: Put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish the oil throughout your mouth. Make sure that you are thoroughly swishing the oil throughout your entire mouth and pulling the oil back and forth through your teeth. Continue swishing for 15 to 20 minutes. When finished, spit the coconut oil into a toilet or trash can to avoid clogging your drain pipes.

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has been used for years as a cleaning and whitening solution, as it is a natural antibacterial agent. So, it is no surprise that hydrogen peroxide offers numerous dental benefits, such as eliminating bad bacteria in your mouth, keeping your breath fresher, and naturally whitening your teeth. It can also fight against gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. While hydrogen peroxide is extremely beneficial, this method should not be used on younger children.

Directions: To use hydrogen peroxide as a rinse, combine one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts water and gently swish around your mouth for 60 seconds. Only use a 1.5% or 3% solution, as high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide can cause gum irritation and tooth sensitivity. Spit the rinse into the sink, and thoroughly rinse your mouth. To use as a paste, mix 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and gently brush with the mixture. Only use hydrogen peroxide mixtures a few times a week, as overuse can deteriorate your tooth enamel.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains antibacterial properties that can help to whiten your teeth, rid your mouth of bad bacteria, and remove surface stains. It does this by breaking down unhealthy germs and plaque that cling to your teeth, while also promoting the growth of probiotic bacteria.

Directions: Using your finger or toothbrush, gently rub apple cider vinegar onto your teeth and let sit for about a minute. Thoroughly rinse your mouth out with water afterward.  Since apple cider vinegar can damage your tooth enamel if misused, only use apple cider vinegar a couple times each week and always brush gently.

  1. Healthy Habits

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a major part of acquiring whiter teeth. This means you should:

  • Cut back on the sugary sweets and sodas. Sugar leads to plaque and gingivitis, which can discolor your teeth.
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco. Both of these activities cause tooth discoloration.
  • Consume an adequate amount of calcium. Calcium strengthens your enamel, which keeps your dentin, which is yellow in color, from becoming exposed.
  • Consume lots of fruits and veggies! Consuming high amounts of fruits and vegetables is not only good for your body, but also good for your teeth, as they can help to rub plaque off your teeth as you chew and contain vitamins that protect your gums from bacterial infections.
  • Regularly visit the dentist! Visiting the dentist regularly can make all the difference in whitening your teeth. Your dentist will ensure that your teeth are healthy, strong, and free from plaque or tartar, which discolor and damage your teeth.

We know it’s nearly impossible to avoid all unhealthy or sugary foods, so here’s an extra piece of advice: Consume beverages that are known to stain your teeth, like coffee, soda, and red wine, with a straw to prevent direct contact with your teeth, and moderate how often you have them. Also, drink water as soon as possible after indulging in anything that contains a lot of sugar or has the ability to stain your teeth.
