What Is Invisalign®?
You may have seen commercials or advertisements for Invisalign® clear aligners but aren’t 100 percent sure how they work. These are dental aligner trays that are made from flexible, medical-grade, near-invisible plastic that is free of BPA, BPS, or latex. The trays fit snugly over the teeth, applying a gentle pressure that leads to aligning and straightening them over time without affecting your current appearance.
They are designed to straighten teeth that have:
- Minor gaps
- Mild bite issues, such as an overbite or under bite
- Minor crowding
While they aren’t always ideal for fixing teeth with severe alignment issues with teeth with deep roots, such as molars, in some cases, SmartForce® attachments are necessary for more complex tooth shifting.
The Invisalign® Process
If you are interested in using clear aligners to straighten your teeth, the process begins by setting up a consultation with a dentist in Raleigh who offers Invisalign®. They will start by evaluating your teeth to determine if Invisalign® is right for you and outlining how it works. Additionally, they will discuss your timeframe to reach your goal smile.
Then, if you both decide that this is the right step, thanks to innovative technology, your dentist will perform a fast, highly accurate digital scan of your smile, and from those scans, will be able to map out your custom treatment plan. There’s no need for impressions or molds to be taken! After you approve your treatment plan, your scans are sent to craft your custom aligners, which will be made for you and delivered to your dentist’s office.
Additionally, your dentist may recommend you have a dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning to make sure your smile is healthy and ready for your aligners.
How Invisalign® Straightens Teeth
With traditional metal braces, the wires are tightened and adjusted by the orthodontist on a regular basis, which pulls the teeth into alignment in a way that is often uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Invisalign® works much differently. The trays fit snugly over the teeth, gently and gradually straightening them. Your treatment plan includes a map of how your teeth will shift, so every week to two weeks, you will use new trays to continue to gently shift the teeth into a straight position. No painful adjustments, ever!
While some aligners are unable to make complex tooth movements, Invisalign® can work with SmartForce® attachments. These are tooth-colored pieces that are attached to your teeth before or during your treatment plan. They act as a “handle” which allows the aligner to gently push against the tooth to move it into the desired place more effectively. These are not used in every case, and your dentist will determine if they’re necessary.
Benefits of Using Invisalign® to Straighten Teeth
If you’re considering traditional braces or clear aligners, Invisalign® offers the following benefits:
Minimally Invasive and Pain-Free
Aside from the initial evaluation and scan, plus follow-ups with your dentist in Raleigh to check progress every four to six weeks, using Invisalign® is not an invasive process. Once you receive the trays, you simply fit them over your teeth without worry.
The plastic aligners are made from a patented thermoplastic polyurethane, called SmartTrack® which was custom created for Invisalign® aligners. They’re completely clear and thin, so when they are worn, it’s nearly impossible to see them. Even people you’re talking to or close to won’t be able to notice you are wearing them.
With traditional braces, once they are on, they stay on your teeth for 18 to 36 months. One of the biggest problems is that food and debris are caught in the wires or between teeth and it’s difficult to effectively brush and floss to remove it. Wearing traditional metal braces means that you’re at a higher risk of tooth decay and gingivitis.
With Invisalign®, you can remove the dental aligners when you eat, brush your teeth, or floss. This not only lets you eat comfortably, but you can maintain your dental hygiene without obstacles. As long as you wear the aligners for 21 to 22 hours a day, only removing them to eat then brush and floss your teeth, removing them won’t affect their effectiveness.
Shorter Time Span
While every case is different and the length of your treatment is dependent upon the severity or complexity of your dental alignment, the average time to wear Invisalign® is about 12 to 18 months. However, you may start seeing changes in your teeth in a few weeks!
Amazing Results and Healthier Teeth
The biggest benefit to using Invisalign® is the outcome. It can correct crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth as well as fix issues with how your teeth fit together. This will not only improve the look of your smile, it will make your teeth healthier and reduce your chances of gum disease.
