What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is becoming more and more popular as time goes on. What’s the difference between general and cosmetic dentistry? While general dentistry consists of basic and preventative procedures such as cavity fillings or basic teeth whitening, cosmetic dentistry is focused on maintaining and also improving your overall appearance. Those with chipped, discolored, misshapen, or even missing teeth are prime candidates for these services.

For example, patients concerned with making their teeth whiter and brighter are in need of a cosmetic dentistry consultation, not a general one. Because some of these services may not be covered by insurance or may have a high out-of-pocket expense, be sure to get all of the financial details ironed out. Along with that, be sure to fully understand any special maintenance needed after the service is administered.Raleigh Cosmetic Dentistry

What’s included in cosmetic dentistry?

At Six Forks Smiles, composite fillings, porcelain crowns, fixed bridges and veneers, six-month and invisible braces, Invisalign, Periolase laser dentistry, aligners and retainers, Inman aligners, and teeth whitening are included in our cosmetic dentistry services.

Composite fillings are viable solutions for those who have suffered from chipped teeth, an unwelcoming gap between teeth, broken or cracked teeth, excessive tooth decay, or worn down teeth. Depending on the severity, these procedures can typically be completed in one appointment with Dr. Schmorr, our Raleigh dentist. She will ensure the fillings are shaped, placed, and polished appropriately, providing you with an inviting and healthy smile.

Placed over an entire tooth, porcelain crowns are ideal solutions for those who have chipped, decayed or damaged teeth that cannot be restored. Otherwise known as dental crowns, porcelain crowns are durable and can typically be completed during two appointments.

Porcelain fixed bridges, on the other hand, are non-removable implants used to replace multiple teeth. At Six Forks Smiles, we offer traditional bridges (made out of porcelain and metal fused together) and porcelain bridges (tooth-colored, equipped with a crown on each side of the artificial teeth.) The process of getting porcelain bridges can take several visits start-to-finish, as obtaining teeth molds and sending material to a dental laboratory is required. These bridges are durable but will likely need to be recemented after a handful of years due to inevitable wear.

Porcelain veneers consist of thin pieces of porcelain shaped and colored for your smile. These thin pieces are bonded to the front of your teeth and are not permanent. They can last many years and completing the process requires at least two visits. Appropriate flossing and brushing, along with attending regular general dental visits can lengthen porcelain veneers’ lifespans.

Are dental veneers permanent?
Though porcelain veneers have been known to last for decades at a time, they’re not considered permanent. For most patients, it is recommended to replace their porcelain veneers every 10-15 years. Keep in mind, this procedure is irreversible!

Six Month Braces are becoming more and more popular. If you want to improve the health and look of your smile without spending several years stuck with traditional run-of-the-mill metal braces, these braces may be for you! Several of our patients notice their desired result between four and nine months, with six months being around average.

Invisalign is a modern approach that aims to achieve straight teeth without having to wear visible, inconvenient, and uncomfortable braces. Invisalign can generally straighten out your teeth within 12 months’ time, unlike traditional braces that take around 24 months. Removable containers, simple oral hygiene care, and optimal comfort are a few reasons why our patients love this cosmetic dentistry approach.

Often referred to as lingual braces, invisible braces are custom-fit for each patients’ mouth and teeth and allow patients to avoid discoloring spots on the front of their teeth. They’re offered for both upper and lower teeth and have been known to effect speech slightly depending on fit. Adjusting lingual braces is required in order to optimize effectiveness. During the adjustment, Dr. Schmorr provides various comfort aides to aid in this process.

Fairly self-explanatory, aligners and retainers are designed to correct misaligned teeth in a convenient and timely manner. Made of lightweight, clear plastic, aligners and retainers are comfortable to wear and don’t interfere with patients’ speech.

Inman aligners are basic, removable appliances that are used to align patients’ front teeth fast, safely, and painlessly. The cost of Inman aligners will vary depending on the severity of your case, as will the start-to-finish timelines. This option is regularly referred to as an extremely affordable way to straighten teeth.

Perhaps one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry services, teeth whitening is an ideal choice for those who suffer from fluorosis (excessive fluoride from developing teeth), natural wearing, and/or teeth staining from smoking, drinking coffee, or taking medicine. Usually completed in two in-person visits, custom molds will be created for you. These trays are to be worn twice a day for 30 minutes at a time for a handful of weeks. Exact timeframes differ depending on severity.

How expensive is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry costs vary tremendously. Teeth whitening can cost up to $350, while porcelain veneers can cost up to $1,200 per tooth. If you’re interested in learning more about our cosmetic dentistry services, be sure to contact us today!

Does insurance cover cosmetic dentistry procedures?

Every insurance company offers different plans. In most cases, dental insurance carriers do not offer coverage for elective procedures like they do with general preventative services that are focused on maintaining oral health. We are happy to answer any insurance-related questions you may have!

Is teeth whitening necessary?

Teeth whitening is not necessary, but you may not be able to remove the layers of stain and discoloration on your teeth on your own. Whether you’re a smoker, coffee drinker, or just simply interested in a dramatically brighter smile, teeth whitening can do wonders!

Where can I go for general dentistry?

The team at Six Forks Smiles can provide general dentistry services on a per-call basis, after hours, and on the weekend.
