What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots crafted from titanium that give a replaced or fixed tooth a permanent foundation. They are surgically installed inside the jaw-line beneath the gums and work to hold your tooth in place. Immediately after the dental implant is installed and the tooth is attached, the ease and flexibility of chewing and drinking are restored. This process begins by creating an artificial tooth root with titanium screws. Once the root is created and implanted and your tooth is secured to the implant, a porcelain crown is then placed over the damaged tooth. Our dental implants from Six Forks Smiles are strong, durable, and constructed to last many years. However, frequent or normal wear may require replacing or adjusting every so often.

What are Crowns?

Once the damaged tooth is secured to the implant, a porcelain crown is then placed over it. Porcelain crowns are an effective solution to restoring damaged teeth and are individually designed to closely resemble that of a natural tooth. They are simply tooth-shaped caps that are placed over a damaged tooth to completely restore the tooth’s shape and functionality, while also adding more resilience, durability, and strength to the problematic tooth. Porcelain crowns replace the entire external portion of a tooth, from the tip of the tooth to the gums. Once the porcelain crown is secured over the damaged tooth, it will look and feel like a natural tooth and function exactly like your other, normal teeth.

What are Dental Implants Used For?

  • Replace one or multiple teeth that are missing or damaged.
  • Relief of symptoms caused by shifting teeth, including joint pain and bite problems.
  • Restoration of your smile.
  • Restore problems with chewing, digestion, or speech.
  • Restoration of facial tissue.
  • Stabilize and support bridges or dentures.

What Do Dental Implants Involve?

When getting a dental implant, the entire process can involve several visits which can span across several months.

At the initial consultation, our professionals will take an x-ray and impressions of your teeth and jaw to see if you would be an appropriate candidate for a dental implant.  Once the reviews are examined and confirmed, at your next appointment, the dentist will numb the affected area and surgically infuse the dental implant into the jawline.  Once completed, the six-month healing process will begin.  Depending on the type of implant you receive, after the healing process, a second surgery may be necessary; however, the dentist will discuss all your options with you prior to the first surgery.

After the implant(s) has healed, our team of professionals will create an artificial tooth that is individually sculpted to look as natural as possible and attach it to the post. Your fitting may take several visits, and up to two months to complete. Once the tooth is secured to the post, your smile is then completely restored, and your damaged tooth has full functionality again.

Our Raleigh restorative dentists will give you specific instructions on how to care for your dental implant and discuss proper oral hygiene to ensure the life of your implant.
