What is Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas is a commonly used sedative to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during their dental procedures. Unlike injected anesthetics or pills, laughing gas is a mild, sweet-smelling gas that is combined with oxygen and administered to patients through a mask. The patient breathes in the gas and experiences a calming sensation, almost euphoric sensation that helps manage the pain and anxiety of dental procedures.

Known for being one of the safest methods of Raleigh sedation dentistry, laughing gas only relaxes the patient, rather than putting the patient into a sleep state. As a result, if you are given laughing gas, you will be able to communicate, see, and hear as if no treatment was being used at all.

Sedation Dentistry in Raleigh
What Does It Feel Like?

The gas mixture is dispersed through a small mask that is fitted over your nose so the treatment can easily be inhaled through the nose and mouth. Once the mask is applied, the sedation dentist in Raleigh will ask you to breathe slowly while the mixture is released.

Laughing gas works within a few minutes and most users report feeling effects including:

  • Feeling silly or giggling
  • Floating sensations
  • Euphoric and happy
  • Tingling sensation in arms and legs
  • Light-headedness
  • Heavy feelings in the arms and legs

Benefits of Inhalation Sedation

Using laughing gas is a safe, effective way to relax nervous patients, and it’s been used in dentist offices since 1844. Unlike most methods that last a set amount of time, the effects of laughing gas begin within a few minutes of starting and end within a few minutes of removing the mask.  It can even be turned off if you don’t need it or easily restarted if you do. For people who are scared of needles, laughing gas may even be used as a substitute for injected numbing agents.

Using Caution with Laughing Gas

As with any sedative, there are some signs to look out for when receiving laughing gas. If it’s turned to high or you’re breathing too quickly you may experience mild negative side effects including nausea, headache, and fatigue. If you should experience any of those feelings, alert your sedation dentist in Raleigh immediately, and they can reduce the effect or you can simply remove the mask to clear your head a bit!

Be sure to let your Raleigh sedation dentist know if these conditions apply to you prior to receiving laughing gas:

  • Pregnancy
  • Sinus congestion or a cold that makes breathing through your nose difficult
  • COPD, emphysema, or multiple sclerosis
  • Claustrophobia or fear of wearing something over your nose
